Village of Yesteryear
Traditional Handcrafts and Photographic Exploration
Purpose:
To provide an opportunity for an exploration of the Village of Yesteryear using photography.
Objective:
To allow students to learn about the people who create different types of and skills used in the creation of traditional handcrafts; to build skill in capturing photographic images.
NC Standard Course of Study Correlation:
Grades K-12: Visual Arts - Competency Goal 5
(National Standard 4)
CRAFTS: Find photo opportunities for the following types of crafts:
1.
A craft that is made from only one material;
2.
A craft that is made using some type of fabric or fiber;
3.
A craft that is made from wood;
4.
A craft that requires tools;
5.
A craft that is made from metal;
6.
A craft that is something you would wear;
7.
A craft that is something you would actually use in some way.
CRAFTSMEN: Now, let’s look at people. Find the following:
1.
Person who has been doing the craft for 25 years or more;
2.
Two or more craftsmen from the same family;
3.
A craftsman dressed in a historical costume that you find interesting;
WORKING HANDS: What about the “working hands” in the Village? Create images of the hands of the craftsmen doing different types of work.

Carving

Painting

Shaping
