Learning About Traditional Handcrafts
SCAVENGER HUNT

Purpose:  To provide an opportunity for an exploration of the Village of Yesteryear either on site or through a virtual visit.

Objective:  To allow students to learn about different types of traditional handcrafts, the history of the crafts as part of our cultural and family heritage, and the skills and materials used in the creative process.

Grade 4:  Social Studies – Competency Goals 1, 2, & 5
Grade 8:  Social Studies – Competency Goal 1

1.North Carolina has three geographic regions.  Choose two craftsmen from different parts of the State and identify where they are from – town/city, county, and region.

2.The rich traditional craft heritage that is present in North Carolina is also found throughout the southeast.  Locate a craftsman from a state other than North Carolina and gather the following information:

3.Many craftsmen have learned skills that have been handed down for generations, while other craftsmen may be the first in their families to learn.  Identify the following types of craftsmen:

4.Many crafts are created from natural resources available in North Carolina.  Consider some of these natural materials that could be used in making traditional crafts and identify three:

6.Now that you have viewed many of the craftsmen at work, choose one craft that you would like to learn more about.  For on site visits, interview the craftsman.  For virtual visits, you may email the craftsman.  Write two questions that you would like to ask.
